Why Captiva Island Is the Ultimate Florida Getaway
For my 35th birthday this past April, I wanted something chill, beachy, and a little bit indulgent without the hustle of a big city—and Captiva Island turned out to be just the place.
This post is all about traveling to Captiva Island, Florida.

This tiny island on Florida’s Gulf Coast gave me everything I was craving—coastal charm, great food, and that slow, sunshine-soaked vibe that makes you forget what day it is. From beach days that stretched forever to fresh seafood dinners by the water, Captiva delivered on all fronts.
The island’s been through it—Hurricane Ian hit hard back in 2022, and a lot of places took a big hit. But what stood out to me is how much heart this place has. Businesses have reopened, the beaches are still stunning, and that relaxed, small-island feel is still very much alive. It’s quiet, it’s cozy, and it knows how to bounce back.
If you’re dreaming of a chill getaway with character, natural beauty, and some hidden gems, here’s the inside scoop on how to do Captiva right.
Why Captiva Island is a Luxe Destination
Captiva isn’t flashy, and that’s what makes it feel special. There are no high-rises or big commercial chains—just palm-lined streets, colorful cottages, and stunning beaches. The vibe is effortlessly elevated, with a touch of old Florida charm that makes you want to kick off your shoes and stay a while.
What stood out to me most was how easy it was to slow down—morning coffee on the porch, stopping at local ice parlors, and spending lazy afternoons on the sand. It’s a place where you can live in your swimsuit, but still end the day with a really good meal and glass of wine by the water.
Where to Stay: My Captiva Island Birthday Escape
We rented a 5-bedroom house right at the tip of the island, and it was perfect for our group. It had plenty of space, a sandy beach-house vibe, and was just a short walk to the ocean—which meant long beach days were a must.

If you’re planning a trip, I’d 100% recommend going the rental route. It gives you the space and flexibility to settle in and enjoy the island at your own pace. Just a heads-up: our house didn’t come with beach chairs, and we had to buy some not-so-great ones for $30. So—pro tip—rent beach chairs in advance and have them dropped off before you arrive.

Grocery Run: Stocking Up the Smart Way
If you’re staying in a house like we did, do yourself a favor and hit up the last Publix before you cross the bridge to Captiva Island. There are spots to grab food on the island, but having the bulk of your groceries ahead of time just makes life so much easier—especially if you’re traveling with a group.

We had three families and loaded up with everything we’d need for the week—snacks, breakfast staples, grill essentials, drinks, you name it. It worked out perfectly. We made big breakfasts every morning, grilled by the pool in the afternoons, and even did a full family-style dinner one night. Totally worth planning ahead for those chill, stay-in meals.
Where to Eat: Fresh Finds & Waterfront Vibes
Dinner at The Green Flash was a highlight—set right on the water with beautiful sunset views. I had the ahi tuna and it was so fresh and flavorful. The view, the breeze, the peaceful vibe… it made for such a memorable night.

We also stopped by RC Otter’s Island Eats, which had a fun, coastal energy and live music playing as we sat outside. The weather in early spring was perfect—warm, breezy, and ideal for dining al fresco. It’s one of those places where you can truly unwind, enjoy good food, and feel like you’re on island time.

What to Do: Chill Days & Easy Adventures
We kept it super simple with long beach days and just soaking in the sunshine. One of the best parts about Captiva Island is that you don’t need to do a ton to enjoy it. But if you’re up for a little exploring (or planning ahead for next time), here are a few favorites:
Pool Party: There’s nothing I love more than a good pool party, so for my sister’s and my 35th, we went all in. Think fun floats, cocktails, and a few classic drinking games—basically, I wanted to feel like I was still in my 20s, and mission accomplished.
Bike Rides: We didn’t rent bikes this time, but definitely wish we had. Captiva’s flat, breezy roads are perfect for biking. Rentals can be delivered right to your house—check prices and book online before you arrive.
Shelling: The beaches here are famous for their shells—early morning walks are the best time to find them.
Water Activities: Paddleboarding and kayaking are popular, or book a dolphin cruise if you’re in the mood for something scenic.
Ice Cream Run: Started my birthday morning with a walk to a local ice cream parlor—none for me (dairy and I aren’t on speaking terms), but my bestie treated herself. Highly recommend indulging, even if it’s 10am!
Gallery Hopping: Pop into Jungle Drums Gallery and 2 Islands Gallery to see local art and handmade pieces—great for a little browsing between beach sessions.
What to Pack (and What I Wore) for Captiva Island
Packing for Captiva Island is all about keeping your vacation wardrobe light and effortless. Think beachy, breathable, and easy to throw on after a long day in the sun. Here’s what I wore and what I’d recommend bringing:
Swimsuits: Bring at least two (you’ll practically live in them). I like to pack three that each serve a purpose in the tanning department—a bandeau for no shoulder lines, a triangle top for a little side-boob action, and an itty-bitty one for the all-over glow. But that’s just me being a little extra about my tan lines!
Cover-ups: Flowy cover-ups are a must—perfect for going from beach to lunch without missing a beat. Pack at least a few; they’re super easy to rewear and still feel cute.
Easy Dresses & Matching Sets: Lightweight, casual dresses and sets were my go-tos for dinner or just exploring around the island.
Shorts & Tees: Perfect for bike rides, ice cream runs, or lounging at the house.
Sandals & Flip-Flops: One pair for the beach, one pair that feels a little “cuter” for dinners out.
Hat & Sunglasses: The Florida sun is no joke—I wore my wide-brim hat and big sunnies every day.
Light Sweater or Jean Jacket: Evenings can get breezy, so I was glad I packed a layer or two.
Minimal Makeup & Skincare: I kept it super low-maintenance. Tinted sunscreen, a bit of bronzer, peptide mascara, lip balm, and I was good to go.
Pool Party & Beach Gear: Don’t forget the fun stuff—pool floats, a soft foldable cooler, an insulated water bottle (hydrate, don’t dry out!), and a Bluetooth speaker to keep the party playlist going.

Where to Shop: A Quick Stop on Sanibel
On the way home, we stopped in Sanibel Island for a little shopping—and I’m so glad we did. Sanibel has a few more boutiques and charming shops compared to Captiva Island, so it’s worth the detour if you’re looking for souvenirs, beachy home goods, or breezy resort wear.
One of the boutique owners even thought we were on spring break from college, which—let’s be honest—was probably the best birthday gift a 35-year-old woman could ask for. Still glowing from that compliment.
Insider Tips
Best time to visit: We went in early spring and it was chef’s kiss—perfect weather and not too crazy. Peak season runs December to April, with Spring Break (mid-Feb to April) being the busiest. Honestly, it’s a great spot anytime you’re craving some chill and sunshine.
Transportation: Rent bikes ahead of time and have them dropped off. You’ll use them more than you think. You can even get a golf cart if you rent a house far from the beach.
Beach gear: Pre-arrange beach chair rentals so you don’t end up scrambling like we did.
Dining: We went during peak season with a party of 12 and still got seated right away—so honestly, reservations felt unnecessary. That said, it can’t hurt to book ahead, especially if there’s a place you really want to try.
