This article is about Christmas outfits 2026.
December is my second favorite month of the year, and somehow it’s the one where I have the least time to get dressed. Between the holiday shopping, the hosting and a calendar that fills up by the first week, my outfit slides to the bottom of the to-do list, right under the wrapping paper and the cookies I keep saying I’ll bake.
So this year I’m planning my outfits the way I plan my Christmas list: early, and with a little more enthusiasm than strictly necessary (hey, nobody is too old for a wish list). I’ll also admit I’m the type who wears the most festive dress I own even when Christmas Eve is just dinner at my parents’ house.
If your December calendar looks anything like mine, you’ll need something to wear almost every weekend. Here’s what I’d wear to each plan, from the tree farm to Christmas morning, and which pieces are worth spending on.
What to Wear for Every Christmas Plan in 2026
Dressing for Christmas comes down to matching the outfit to the plan. Daytime things need clothes you can move in, anything outdoors needs a real coat, and the dinner that matters needs one dressy piece. And let’s be honest; red, tartan and faux fur will carry most of December on their own.
11 Christmas Outfits 2026 for Women
One for every plan, so you’re not standing in front of your closet while the car’s already running downstairs.
1. The Christmas Tree Farm

Picking out the tree is part errand, part tradition, so it’s worth wearing something you’d be happy to run into friends in. A long faux fur coat over a cardigan and jeans looks dressed up but still lets you carry a tree to the car. Add leather gloves, because pine needles are sharper than they look.
2. Gingerbread House Afternoon

This is an outfit for standing at a kitchen island while the icing hardens in the piping bag. A fair Isle sweater with straight leg jeans is both parts chic and cozy.

3. Holiday Market Outing

Tartan shows up every December, but a patchwork maxi skirt is a fresher way to wear it than another plaid scarf. Pair it with a big cable knit for a day at the market, and add a red scarf for color.

4. Holiday Party With Friends

Red tights might sound like a lot, but they’re the easiest way to turn a simple outfit into a party outfit. Pair them with a matching red dress or a turtleneck sweater and mini shorts over a white faux fur coat.

5. Office Holiday Party

The office party is still a work event, so aim for festive without looking like you’ve already left for vacation. A satin tie with a plaid skirt borrows from menswear and stays office appropriate. Add a pair of red heels to make it festive without a single sequin.

6. Christmas Shopping in NYC

Holiday shopping means carrying things, so a sweater over a thin cashmere turtleneck is the move. You can leave the coat at home and keep your hands free for the bags, which is the whole point.

7. Favorite Things Party

If you buy one party piece this year, make it a sequin skirt. It works with a cashmere crewneck you already own, and it’ll come out every December after this one.

8. Last Day in The Office Before Christmas Outfit

The last day in the office before Christmas brings back that nostalgia for being a kid in school the day before break, swapping small gifts and doing holiday projects instead of real work. I still love the no pants look for the holidays, and an oversized faux fur coat with tailored micro shorts and tights is the move.

9. Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is the night to wear the dress you’ve been saving all season. Velvet is about as festive as fabric gets, and this one from Nana Jacqueline only needs sheer tights, suede pumps and a pair of drop earrings. You don’t need to be at the Plaza to dress like a million bucks.

10. Christmas Dinner

Christmas dinner is long and full of second helpings, so an outfit with a little give is important. Tartan is about as traditional as Christmas dressing gets, and I love this matching set by More To Come. Add a Ralph Lauren bear sweater so you still look chic when the blazer comes off.

11. Christmas Morning

Christmas morning is all about coffee, stockings and not leaving the couch for a while, so the pajamas are the outfit. Go satin if you’re spending it with someone else’s family and flannel if it’s a slow morning at home, and yes, you need the Santa hat.
How to Choose Your Christmas Outfits This Year
You don’t need a new outfit for every plan this December. Most of these Christmas outfits 2026 start with the sweaters and jeans you already own, so put your money into one or two pieces you’ll wear all month, like a long coat or a sequin skirt. And hold on to that Fair Isle sweater. It never really goes out of style.
