I have been thinking about baggy jeans outfits for most of this year, and not in the way people usually mean when they say they have been thinking about a trend. I mean I have been watching how real people are wearing them on the subway, at the bodega on the corner of my block, at the gallery openings I drag my boyfriend to on Thursday nights. The reference here is not the 2002 Von Dutch era, it is something softer, more considered, more grown.

What I keep seeing is women treating baggy jeans the way their mothers treated a good black trouser. Anchor piece, wear constantly, build the rest of the look around it. The difference is that the proportions are now the point, a barrel leg, a low slung waist, a pool of denim over a flat shoe, and suddenly the same white tee you have worn a hundred times reads like an outfit.

A baggy jean with a pointed pump is the kind of move I saw in a Céline lookbook from the Phoebe era and filed away for later. The leather jacket on top keeps the whole thing from looking like you are trying to be a grownup. Why Baggy Jeans Outfits Are Not Basic

Baggy jeans outfits work because they leave room for personality in a way few other basics do. The denim sets the tone, but it is the styling around it that really shapes the look.
